Are your pets at home, while you are on vacation??

All year you have been planning your trip or your vacation, and finally you are ready to go!! Yeah, summer is here! But what about your pets??? Hopefully you have planned a vacation where they can come along!! But that is not always possible.

So,let me start out with a horror story that happened to a friend of mine, and is still haunting me. A couple of years ago they went on vacation to Europe, where they couldn't take their three dogs. They were going to be gone for two weeks.
So they called a pet sitter, whom they didn't personally know, but whose business card they had somehow gotten. They made arrangements with the pet sitter to go 2x a day to the house, walk and feed the dogs and play with them during the 2 weeks they were gone.

The pet sitter agreed and off they went on their dream vacation.

When they got home 2 weeks later they found the unimaginable!!! The dogs were alive, but they were lethargic, starved and dehydrated! The couch was destroyed! The carpets had holes in them in front of the doors from scratching. The cabinet doors, where the dog food was, had been chewed through.....the list goes on!!!

When they called the pet sitter, - no answer! Apparently she had never been to the house!

I am just telling you this to make sure you understand, how important it is to plan for your pets as well, when you go on vacation!

First of all: Plan way in advance for your pets!!! No last minute..."Oh yeah, I need a pet sitter!!!!"
After all you want your pets to have a great time too, while you are relaxing on the beach!

Here are some helpful tips!

  • Ask a friend, someone you know and trust, or a professional pet sitting service to take care of your furry family members! Interview them, and have them come for a visit. Watch how your pets react to them and listen to your intuition.

Sometimes it is better to consider a house sitter, someone who stays at your house, while you are away. {same rule!! make sure you know and trust the person!}

  • Make sure they have a list of things you want them to do!
Write down all your instructions, no matter how trivial something may seem. Your house and pets may be new to your sitter so every little thing will be helpful., then make a checklist of tasks that are to be done daily so that nothing is forgotten.

Inform your the veterinarian of your travel plans, naming your pet sitter, and authorizing the veterinarian to provide any treatment necessary while you are away (including to euthanize the pet if in the pet’s best interest). Make arrangements how to pay the vet bill.

  • Make sure your sitter has phone # and contact # of some of your friends, in case of emergency
  • check in on them frequently while you are gone, to make sure everything is ok, and or have a friend go by the house to check.
Have a wonderful trip, knowing that your beloved furry family members will have a wonderful time as well!!

Painted a little munchkin this weekend

I found some words about flat nosed cats on the web and wanted to share:

There are many beautiful breeds of cats in the world with some boasting a wild look and others that are just too cute for words. Cats with short muzzles really stand out from the crowd with the Persian probably being the most well-known of them all. However, there are other breeds that boast flatter faces that are just as lovely and a few of them are listed below.

The Delightful Exotic Shorthair

The Exotic shorthair is well-known for their gorgeous teddy-bear appeal, they are loving, affectionate yet independent characters and a real pleasure to have around. These little felines have the cutest faces, but they can be prone to suffering from certain breathing issues, especially when the weather is warm which is why it's so important to keep a close eye on them during the hotter summer months.
You also need to keep an eye on their weight because these pussy cats can be real couch potatoes if they are allowed to be. Making sure they are fed a well-balanced diet that suits the amount of activity they get on a daily basis, goes a long way in keeping their weight under control. If a cat carries too much weight, it can lead to all sorts of health issues including diabetes!

The Gorgeous Himalayan

A mix between the lovely Persian and a Siamese, the gorgeous Himalayan has inherited their good looks from both parent breeds. They are well-known for their kind natures which they also get from their parents. They are playful and affectionate which is why they have become one of the most popular feline companions on the planet.
Sharing a home with a Himalayan pussy cat is a real pleasure because if there is one thing these gorgeous looking felines do well it's to keep you entertained with their playful antics and kind natures. However, they are pretty busy characters which means they don't like to be left to their own devices for long periods of time!

The Cute Scottish Fold

There's no doubt at all that Scottish Folds are lovely looking felines and have to be among the cutest on the planet with their massive eyes and curled up ears. Their cuteness is only matched by their lovely, affectionate natures and the breed is well-known for being incredibly placid and gentle. They are fun to be around because they stay “kitten-like” even in their adult years and there's nothing they enjoy more than playing interactive games with you whenever they can.
As their name suggests, these delightful pussy cats originate in Scotland and are a relatively new breed on the cat scene only first being appearing back in the sixties. The breed had an immediate impact on the cat world with their stunning, large round eyes and cuter than cute expressions. Scottish folds can boast either a long or short coat and have a habit of sitting up on their back legs which is very reminiscent of prairie dogs which all adds to the endearing appeal.

The Very Pretty Selkirk Rex

It's not only their gorgeous curly coats that are so eye catching because these adorable looking felines boast such pretty faces too. They have extremely large eyes, short stubby faces and large bat-like ears that really makes them stand out from the crowd.
They are well known for their kind and affectionate natures having inherited many of the characteristics and traits of parent breeds which includes those of the gorgeous Persian. Selkirk Rex cats are very laid-back characters and they like nothing more than watching the world go by with intermittent bouts of playfulness.

The Stunning and Ever Popular Persian Cat

As previously mentioned, the Persian cat has to be one of the most recognised and popular felines in the world and for centuries they have been delighting their owners with their wonderful looks and kind, affectionate natures. They have to be among the most “laid-back” cats ever which is why they make sure a wonderful choice as a family pet.
Persian cats have glorious coats which do take a bit of taking care of in the grooming department. But the effort and time spent with your pet is well worth it because they are so lovely to be around on a one to one basis. Naturally, being pampered is something these felines really enjoy.
However, because of their extreme flat faces and shorter than short stubby noses, you have to be very careful and keep an eye on them when the weather is hot because the breed is known to have difficulty in breathing when the temperature starts to rise, especially during the hotter summer months.

Conclusion

Cats are glorious creatures and every one of them has their own personality. They are clever characters and they know how to wrap their owners around their little paws whenever they want something. The five gorgeous breeds mentioned above are masters at doing just this because not only are they lovely looking, but they boast super kind and affectionate natures too!

Miro, my assistant (part 3)

"I want some of that!" "Give me that!" "What ever it is, I NEED it!"

Yep that's my Miro when it comes to food.
But actually he is the pickiest eater of all my cats.
His absolute favorites are #Temptations, treats for cats. They are crunchy on the outside, with a soft, meaty center. Miro especially likes the new version, called:

WAKIN' BAKIN'™. Miro can't have chicken, and these treats have bacon, egg and cheese, perfect for breakfast. After he gobbles down some of them, Miro reminds me that it is time for my morning bath. He runs back and forth to the bathroom and trips me several times in the process, Than he sits on the edge of the tub and watches the water fill in and create bubbles. He balances back and forth and tries to rub his face against mine, so sweet!! And then-. Quickly, he had to catch a bubble, and ooops! He almost fell in! Caught himself once again!

He sits on the toilet lid and watches, while I try to put some make up on. Oh my! There is a hair-tie! Gotta get it! "Excuse me....oh sorry that you just smeared mascara all over your face..." Then he takes one q-tip out of the jar and runs off with it to play, and show Jimmy his treasure. He only takes one, -every time! His morning chores are done. See you later, Mom! He is such a good helper!

My assistant Miro (part 2)

Miro is getting a quick round of playing with his favorite toy in, before we tackle the litter boxes. My best idea ever was to use a kid's swimming pool as my main litter box on our enclosed patio.
Miro thinks so too, because you can race through it and chase your buddies, and scatter the litter every where. (But then Mom needs to bring out the big huge loud vacuum cleaner, and that is scary)!
Anyways, so its time to scoop. We use #Essential #clumping #cat #litter by #Arm&Hammer.
"It is formulated with a blend of safe, natural biodegradable corn based ingredients that work together with baking soda to effectively absorb moisture & eliminate odors. Absorbs more liquid than regular clumping litter. Same number of usages of a 30 lbs clumping litter but only half the weight. It is so effective you won't believe its natural. 100% natural corn fibers. Virtually dust free. Extra strong, easy to remove clumps. Absorbs 2X as much odor-causing urine than clumping clay litter."

So I bend down to scoop and Miro jumps on my back to assess the situation from above. He may quickly have to dig a claw into my back to keep his balance.
Then as I scoop, he jumps into the #litter #box and starts digging. He works hard on piling a huge amount of #litter into one particular spot, preferably the one, where I need to scoop...lol. Oh, and then, all of a sudden he has "to go"!! If you gotta go, you gotta go! Eventually we get done, and the box is nice and clean for a while.

Miro and I have a lot more to do, before I head off to work, so stay tuned.....

My assistant Miro (part 1)

The alarm goes off at 6:00 am now, since I started my new job. I am not a morning person and sometimes, I don't even hear it. That's when Miro jumps into action. he will gently purr into my ear and knead my arm, or whatever body part is uncovered at the time. If I don't respond, he will resort to some more drastic measures and may be poke a claw into my flesh. That usually gets my attention! He won't give up, until I am out of bed.

Then he and Jimmy will give me about 15 min with my cup of tea. In the meantime they check out what happened with the toys overnight. Then Miro is back. He reminds me that it is feeding time by jumping on the kitchen table. I feed my cats #WellnessHealthyIndulgence. They offer a menu of succulent morsels paired with delectable sauces for a taste cats love. Available in: 3 oz. pouches. Highest quality protein sources.

I also feed them #PurinaProPlan Cat Food, which they love as well. Miro is allergic to chicken, so we get the kind that has fish or beef. Miro just nibbles a little and then lets the older cats eat first. He is a real gentleman! Not so Jimmy. Jimmy gulps down everything he can find...lol. I fill up the bowls again. Miro now jumps onto the bird cage, to make sure I don't forget about them. Next it is time to clean the litter boxes.,,,,,,,,
Come back next week to find out how Miro helps with that.

Ear Infection

Jimmy had an ear infection. We cleaned the ear with Witchhazel and a cotton ball, and then used a q-tip to gently spread coconut oil into the upper areas of the ear. The oil will drop down into the ear. You don't want to put the q-tip deep into the ear, as you could injure the eardrum. Witchhazel has a gentle cleansing effect, and is also inflammatory. Coconut oil is proven to be an excellent remedy for treating viral and fungal infections. Much better than going for a round of antibiotics. Always try natural remedies first!
As you can see, Jimmy is all happy now! Look at that face! :)

5 myth about cats

(NewsUSA) -
There are some things that everybody knows about cats, such as they purr when they're happy. But you might be surprised to learn that many of the "facts" you know about cats are actually untrue. For example, while cats often purr when they're happy, they may also purr when they're anxious or uncomfortable.

Do you know fact from fiction about your cat? Here are a few common cat myths debunked:

Myth #1. Cats should drink cow's milk. Cats do not need to drink milk. In fact, cats typically lose the ability to drink milk after they're weaned, so feeding them milk can give them diarrhea.

Myth #2. Cats should eat fish. It's perfectly fine to give Fluffy fish every once in awhile, but it's far from kitty's ideal food. Cats need an amino acid called taurine in their diet, and fish do not provide it. Fish, as a regular part of the diet, could make your cat sick.

Myth #3. It is natural for cats to have bad breath. If kitty's "morning breath" makes you want to heave, it's a sign that your cat has an oral health problem and should see a veterinarian. You can prevent dental problems by brushing your cat's teeth. If your cat is uncooperative, try adding oral care probiotics, like Teddy's Pride Oral Care. Teddy's Pride Oral Care has been designed specifically for the oral care needs of dogs and cats. The probiotics flood pets' mouths with good bacteria, so harmful bacteria are less able to grow. These probiotics can be used in addition to brushing or as a stand-alone oral care routine.

Myth #4. Cats always land on their feet. Cats are agile creatures with the ability to twist in mid-air, but if they're falling from a short height, they won't have time to put themselves feet-first. A fall from a great height could kill or seriously injure a cat, whether it lands on its feet or not.

Myth #5. Cats gain weight if they are spayed or neutered. Cats' metabolisms do change after they are fixed, but weight gain can be easily avoided by simply decreasing the amount of food that you feed them. Spaying or neutering is one of the the best things you can do for your cat, as it reduces the risk of some types of cancer and helps your cat avoid contributing to the pet overpopulation problem.

Seat-belts for pets have several major benefits:
Pets are prevented from being ejected in an accident. Even "low speed" accidents can result in a pet being propelled at 20 mph or more through a windshield.
Restraint pets have a better chance of survival in an accident, and their injuries may be less severe.
Restrained pets cannot jump out of an open window while you are driving
Restrained pets are unable to dash out when a door is opened, preventing a lost pet.
And this restraint removes any chance of the pet interfering with driving,, or bolting in the event of an accident.

Boating with man's best friend

Boating with man's best friend
by: Ed Conroy

Taking along man's best friend on your boating trip could be a great adventure for both you and him/her. For your furry friend boating is like riding in his dream convertible with a blast of sun and fresh air from all directions. Nose in the air, ears blowing in the wind and his/her favorite people; what could be better!

Most all dogs have mastered the famous "Doggie Paddle" but it's always important to stay as safe as possible. Your dog should always wear a life jacket when both in and near the water. That holds true even for breeds of dogs that traditionally love the water and take to swimming quite easily. Such breeds include the following: American Water Spaniel, Barbet, Boykin Spaniel, Bedlington Terrier, Cantabrian Water Dog, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Curly Coated Retriever, Epagneul Pont-Audemer, Flat-Coated Retriever, Golden Retriever, Irish Water Spaniel, Labrador Retriever, Lagotto Romagnolo (a.k.a Italian Water Dog), Münsterländer (large and small), Nova Scotia Duck Toller, Otterhound, Portuguese Water Dog, Spanish Water Dog, Standard Poodle, Newfoundland , Puli, Wetterhound

When taking your dog on water related outings it's important to keep the following five items in mind.

• A towel just for your dog

• A shirt or sweater made out of water-resistant material

• A non - spill water bowl and lots of fresh bottled to put in it

• A pooper-scooper and a trash bag or two

• A life jacket for your dog

Another tip to consider is shade for your friend. Even though your dog may have many opportunities to jump into the water, it's important he/she has a cool relaxing place for resting. Boat surfaces, such as fiberglass, can get extremely hot in the sun. Dogs absorb heat through the pads on their feet so be sure to protect them. Your dog will surely be enjoying himself/herself so much that excitement could hide the fact he/she is overheated.

Now that you have most everything covered pick the perfect day to go have that amazing adventure with your whole family! Always keeping safety first, your dog is bound to have the time of his/her life. Enjoy your trip!
